What defines a TikTok Shop seller (vs creator vs affiliate)
Three roles in the TikTok Shop ecosystem:
- Seller (brand): Owns the SKUs. Sells them on Seller Center. Pays platform fees. Receives payouts. Operates the affiliate program and ads.
- Creator: A TikTok user who makes content. May or may not have 5K+ followers. May or may not be in the affiliate program.
- Affiliate: A creator with 5K+ followers enrolled in the affiliate program. Earns commission for driving Shop sales via Open Plan or Target Plan.
This guide is for sellers — the brand-side operators running the shop.

Fees, margins & payouts
The 2026 TikTok Shop fee stack:
| Fee | Rate | When charged |
|---|---|---|
| Platform referral fee | 6.0% | On GMV, every order |
| Smart Promotion fee | 3.5% | On GMV, if Smart Promo is enabled |
| Creator commission | 8-22% | On affiliate-driven GMV, set by you |
| FBT fees (per unit) | ~$2-$6 | Only if you opt into FBT fulfillment |
| Payment processing | Included | Bundled into platform fee — no separate Stripe-style fee |
Settlement happens approximately 14 days after order delivery (the window covers returns). Working capital implication: plan for 3-4 weeks of cash tied up between order placement and payout in your first 60 days. Existing brands with stable monthly volume see this normalize.
Compliance, returns & disputes
Account health score
TikTok Shop tracks an account health score based on: late-shipment rate, return rate, customer dispute rate, claims compliance, and listing violations. Score drops trigger warnings; sustained low scores cause feature throttling (loss of FBT eligibility, reduced ad reach) and ultimately account suspension.
Common violation types
- Claim violations: Supplements making medical claims, beauty making "cure" claims, food making structure/function claims without substantiation
- IP infringement: Counterfeit goods, unauthorized brand names, trademark misuse
- Late shipment: Orders not fulfilled within the configured shipping template SLA
- Prohibited categories: Firearms, controlled substances, certain medical devices, recall-listed products
Returns
Default return window is 7-15 days depending on category. Return rate norms by vertical (per our 2026 benchmarks): beauty 6%, supplements 5%, food 4%, home 8%, pet 6%, fashion 18-20%, footwear 25%, electronics 12%.
Seller tools, APIs & integrations
- Shopify integration: Sync inventory and orders bi-directionally
- TikTok Shop Open API: Custom integrations for fulfillment, inventory, reporting
- Creator Marketplace: Direct creator discovery and outreach
- Affiliate Center: Open Plan, Target Plan, performance tracking
- FBT Inventory Console: Inventory levels, reorder triggers, FBT receiving
- Third-party analytics: FastMoss, Shoplus, Kalodata for competitive benchmarking
Seller tier programs
TikTok Shop maintains internal seller tiers (referred to as Silver/Gold/Platinum or 0-5 stars depending on market) based on:
- Trailing 30/60/90-day GMV
- Account health (compliance score)
- Order fulfillment SLAs (on-time ship rate)
- Customer dispute and return rates
- Trailing review ratings
Higher tiers unlock dedicated account management, priority dispute resolution, beta-feature access (early access to new ad formats and creator tools), and softer enforcement on minor violations.
Top seller mistakes operators make
- Thin catalog (1-3 SKUs): Single-SKU brands are fragile. Add bundles/variants within 60 days.
- Underpaying commission: 12% commission on a $30 ASP earns the creator $3.60 before TikTok's split. Most quality creators won't bother. 20%+ is the floor.
- Slow sample logistics: Manual sample shipping = creators move on. Build a self-serve sample store on day 1.
- Ignoring FBT: 15-30% CVR lift for most beauty/wellness SKUs. The fees pay for themselves in volume.
- Non-compliant claims: One FDA-style violation can wipe your account. Run every creator brief through a claims-check.
- No data review cadence: Weekly performance reviews are the difference between brands that scale and brands that plateau.
Seller-side KPIs (the ones that matter)
- Weekly GMV and trailing 30-day growth rate
- Net contribution per order (after platform fees, commission, ad spend, COGS)
- GMV Max blended ROAS
- Number of active affiliates + GMV per affiliate
- Top-quartile creator concentration (% of GMV from top 25% of creators)
- Return rate vs category benchmark
- Account health score
- Settlement vs accrued GMV ratio (working capital health)
