Platform referral fee (6%)
TikTok Shop's flat 6% platform referral fee applies to every paid order, calculated on the GMV (gross order value before sales tax). This is comparable to Amazon's 8-15% referral fee by category, eBay's 11-14% final value fee, or Shopify's 2.9% + $0.30 payment-processing fee (though Shopify also has the monthly subscription). At 6%, TikTok Shop is materially cheaper than Amazon for most consumer categories.
The fee is charged automatically at order settlement (14 days post-delivery). There's no separate invoice — it's deducted from your payout.
Smart Promotion fee (3.5%)
Smart Promotion is TikTok's opt-in promotion engine that automatically discounts your products in checkout flows where buyers are price-sensitive. You don't pay Smart Promo unless you enable it — but you almost certainly should. Smart Promo is a prerequisite for full GMV Max ad eligibility, and most TikTok Shop ad placements (VSAs, Spark Ads, PSAs) require it.
The 3.5% fee applies only to orders that converted via the Smart Promo discount. If a buyer pays full price, no Smart Promo fee. In practice, the effective fee across all orders averages ~2-3% (some orders use Smart Promo, some don't).
Creator commission (8-22% by category)
Commission is set by you per SKU. It's the rate creators earn when they drive an affiliate-attributed sale. Median 2026 norms from the MediaLabs benchmark dataset:

Setting commission too low is the #1 cost optimization mistake. A 12% commission on a $30 ASP nets the creator $3.60 per sale before TikTok takes their cut — most quality creators won't bother. 20%+ is the floor for beauty/wellness in 2026.
FBT (Fulfilled by TikTok) fees
FBT is TikTok's first-party fulfillment service — you ship inventory to TikTok's warehouse, they handle picking, packing, and shipping when orders come in. Two cost components:
- Per-unit pick/pack/ship: ~$2-$6 per unit, depending on dimensions and weight. Small beauty/supplement items land at the lower end, larger items at the upper end.
- Storage fees: Free for the first 30 days. After that, monthly storage fees apply based on cubic feet. Move inventory faster than 30 days to avoid these.
FBT economics: CVR typically lifts 15-30% vs 3PL because of the prominent fast-shipping badge and search-result boost. On a $32 AOV beauty SKU with 5% baseline CVR, a 20% CVR lift = 1.0% absolute CVR → ~$0.32 incremental GMV per view × the FBT fee absorbed = usually positive ROI within 30-60 days. Not a fit for high-ASP slow-mover SKUs.
Return rate cost impact
Returns aren't a fee per se — they're lost GMV when buyers return orders within the 7-15 day return window. But you should plan for them like a fee. 2026 benchmark return rates by vertical:
- Beauty 6% · Supplements 5% · Food & beverage 4%
- Home 8% · Pet 6% · Fashion/apparel 18-20%
- Footwear 25% · Electronics 12%
LIVE shopping returns trend 2-4 percentage points higher than non-LIVE because of impulse-buy dynamics. Plan accordingly when modeling LIVE-heavy strategies.
Settlement & payout timing
Approximately 14 days from order delivery to funds available for withdrawal. The 14-day window covers the standard return period — TikTok holds funds until the return window closes, then releases them. Practical implications:
- Cash flow: Plan for 3-4 weeks of working capital tied up between order placement and payout in your first 60 days.
- Stockout risk: If you reinvest payouts into inventory, the lag means you'll need 30-45 days of inventory on hand at any given time.
- Withdrawals: Daily withdrawal cadence to your bank account; some restrictions on weekends/holidays.

Yes — first-purchase economics are slim. This is why subscribe-and-save and repeat purchase mechanics matter so much. A typical TikTok Shop beauty/wellness brand needs 1.5-2 lifetime orders per buyer to be solidly profitable. Bundles, AOV expansion, and email/SMS re-engagement turn the first sale from break-even into a long-term winner.
Can I negotiate TikTok Shop fees?
The 6% platform referral and 3.5% Smart Promo are standardized for nearly all sellers. Some exceptions:
- Top-tier sellers (TikTok's internal seller tiers based on GMV, account health, fulfillment SLAs) sometimes unlock category-specific fee promotions, beta-program rebates, or extended free-FBT-storage windows.
- Agency partner programs (TSP, CAP, TAP) sometimes pass agency-only commission structures through to managed brands.
- Category-specific incentives roll out periodically — TikTok runs fee waivers around tentpole events (Mega Sales 4.4, 6.6, 7.7, etc.) and category launches.
For most sellers, the standard fee stack is what you pay. The right strategy is optimizing inside that fee structure (raise AOV, improve CVR, build repeat purchase) rather than waiting for fee negotiations.
